Lucca sits midway between Florence and Pisa. It doesn’t boast Florence’s glorious but turbulent Renaissance past or one of the Seven Wonders of the World, such as Pisa’s Leaning Tower, but its history speaks of a city that enjoyed a prosperous past and relatively stable political situation for centuries.

This Tuscan city makes no attempt to advertise itself as a tourist site in one of Italy’s most sought travel destinations but it also makes no attempt to live it down. Lucca’s perfectly-preserved heritage landmarks don’t show their age. With a wealth of history, monuments, works of art and signature walls, Lucca is a worthy travel destination in its own right.

Lucca’s History

Lucca is situated about 25 km northeast of Pisa but there is a debate about its early inhabitants. Some say it was originally inhabited by the Ligurian peoples while most scholars and historians claim it was born as an Etruscan city. Its Roman inheritance, however, is beyond question. When the Roman Empire spread, Lucca, called Lucam by the Romans, became part of the Empire in 180 B.C. Lucca’s main square, Piazza San Michele with a dominating Roman church, was the ancient Roman forum.
