The Need to Differentiate Instruction
Differentiation requires more time and preparation than teaching one lesson to the entire class. Because of the lack of time and the material is important for all students to know many teachers prefer to teach to the entire class. But teachers need to understand that not all students are ready to learn material that is above their level. Students more easily learn things that are close to their skill and understanding level. If there is a wide range of reading levels in a class, the teacher needs to differentiate so that all students can learn at their optimal level.
English language learners are broken up into five levels: beginning, early-intermediate, intermediate, advanced, and fluent. Advanced and fluent students can usually survive in a regular classroom. Most newcomers enter at the beginning level. However, even if the entire class consisted of beginning level students, there can still be a wide range of abilities. Students can range from not knowing their alphabet, to reading a few sight words or whole sentences. When that happens, teachers should test students and group them by levels.
