Everyone loves to laugh. The question is not a matter of if but how? While networks like NBC have completely shifted their sitcom diets to single camera comedies, CBS has maintained that the laugh track reigns supreme. CBS might have it right, according to the ratings at least. Their Monday night lineup, all of which are multi-cam sitcoms, are near the top of the ratings. Yet fewer and fewer multi-cam sitcoms are being made. Is CBS taking its own path or just sticking to what they do best? By taking a look at the distinction between the two camera styles as well as the CBS sitcom lineup, it is clear that network prefers the multiple camera style and that they have no intention of changing their ways.
Single-Camera vs Multi-Camera
The basic difference between the two styles is mostly in the cameras. Single-camera style has a show shoot one scene and one angle at a time. Multi-camera is just that; multiple cameras set up along one stage, filming the various angles of the action going on. In terms of the stylistic differences, single-camera has one distinct angle or focus and will often shoot in outside locations. Multi-camera shows have a laugh track following their jokes. While some may consider the laugh track old school, there's no doubt the laugh track makes viewers feel like they're watching with a group of friends… even if they're likely to be dining on a TV dinner for one.
